EMC Opens SMMA-Designed Cloud Data Center in Durham, North Carolina

December 15, 2011

A new 450,000 square foot Center of Excellence and Cloud Data Center, designed by SMMA for EMC Corporation, recently began operations in Durham, North Carolina.  As the first US-based and seventh global EMC Center of Excellence, the new Durham facility houses a virtualized cloud data center and 130,000 square feet of labs to support EMC’s global research and development community.

According to EMC, “The new facility is a showcase to help EMC customers accelerate their own cloud computing and IT transformations.” The Durham data center incorporates several sustainability and energy efficiency design initiativesincluding:

  • Mechanical systems featuring air intake design that captures and distributes outside air for cooling the facility 57% of the year
  • Reuse and integration of existing exterior envelope structure into new building, avoiding cost and environmental impact of demolition
  • Reduced power demand to 1.3 PUE or better, beating benchmarks for similar facilities
  • 40% savings in water use due to rainwater capture and storage. One inch of rain on the 450k sf roof allows for 280k gallons of water saved
  • Modularity of the entire facility allows for easy re-use and adaptability for new technology retrofits (major EMC priority)
  • R&D labs at facility allow integration of Q/A testing and virtual demonstration of VE technology at the site; consolidates scattered functions
  • Durham to serve as a data storage host for 400,000 EMC customers in 80 countries
