K-12 Studio News & Notes

SMMA’s K-12 Studio ended 2013 by gaining the support of several Massachusetts communities for new and renovated school projects.

  • The Wellesley Special Town Meeting (STM) overwhelmingly supported the proposal to renovate two elementary schools – Fiske and Schofield. In addition, the town approved study of three other elementary schools – Hardy, Hunnewell and Upham – to determine "what-if scenarios" for the renovation, replacement or consolidation of these facilities.
  • The Studio was hired as an education consultant for the City of Waltham. The scope includes reviewing the city’s school system with particular attention to a projected enrollment increase of 1,000 students over the next 10 years.
  • And voters in the town of Athol approved the new Athol Elementary School, a 95,000 square-foot, K-4 school. SMMA has been providing Owner’s Project Management (OPM) services on the school over the past year, and will now oversee design and construction.  The $44 million school is scheduled to open in August 2016.
