Van Hamel Earns ALEP Credential

Michael van Hamel Earns ALEP Certification

Michael van Hamel has been certified as an Accredited Learning Environment Planner by an independent commission convened on behalf of the Association for Learning Environments. The ALEP designation was created to "elevate professional standards, enhance individual performance, and identify those in the educational environment industry who demonstrate the knowledge essential to the practice of educational facility planning."

"Michael brings enthusiasm, energy, and a commitment to exceptional educational design to each project he works on," said Lorraine Finnegan, K-12 Studio director. "I'm pleased to congratulate him on earning the ALEP credential, and look forward to his contributions strengthening our practice well into the future."

Michael is the second ALEP at SMMA, making it the only architecture/engineering firm in the Northeast with multiple ALEPs on staff. Phil Poinelli, who serves on A4LE's international board of directors, is the other. Michael has been a key team member on BuildBPS, the 10-year educational and facilities master plan for Boston Public Schools, as well as on the new, in-design Somerville High School.
