Nick Koulbanis Elected to the 2019 AIA Rhode Island Board of Directors

Nick Koulbanis, Senior Project Architect and Director of SMMA’s Higher Education Studio, was elected Secretary to this upcoming year’s AIA Rhode Island Board of Directors during their Annual Meeting last week. "It means a lot to be associated with and work alongside an incredibly talented group of architects,” says Koulbanis. “I feel this will be a great opportunity to give back to my home state.”

Koulbanis, a Rhode Island native from Westerly, graduated from Roger Williams University in 2001 with a Bachelor of Architecture degree and a Construction Management minor. He has been involved in several local Rhode Island projects, including the design of The Center for Culinary Excellence for Johnson & Wales University and the newly completed South Street Landing and Rhode Island Nursing Education Center, a joint project for Rhode Island College and the University of Rhode Island’s nursing programs. He brought his over 17 years of experience in the Higher Education, Life Science, Healthcare, and Medical Simulation sectors to SMMA when he joined in 2017. “It’s truly an honor to be able to give back to the architectural community,” Koulbanis adds. “Growing up in Rhode Island, where my family still lives, this is a role that is close to home. We [SMMA] have a lot to offer Rhode Island, and I can’t wait to expand our presence there and to continue building strong relationships with their communities.”
