Rice Appointed Principal

Matt Rice, AIA, Appointed SMMA Principal

SMMA is thrilled to announce that Matthew Rice, AIA, Project Architect, has been named Principal.

A talented architect at SMMA for over a decade, Rice specializes in large and complex projects in the institutional market, such as Somerville High School, Quincy Comprehensive High School, and Swampscott High School, to name a few.

"Matt is an indispensable part of our K-12 studio," commented Alex Pitkin, AIA, Director of Institutional Practice Studios. "Aside from his ability as an architect, he is a strong advocate for our ultimate clients: the staff and students of our schools."

In fact, recently Rice has been seeking out opportunities to demonstrate virtual reality and 3D interactive modeling to local students, whether that be at a science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) career fair, or a school field trip to the SMMA headquarters. "I find working with students to be wonderfully engaging," he said. "It gives me a great insight into our primary clients, and is a nice way of spreading not only an understanding of architectural design but also how we use design technology to share our ideas."

These engagements bring tremendous value to the K-12 Studio's work. Pitkin commended his work on the ongoing Somerville High School project, in particular.

"He has gained the trust and confidence of each client he works for while helping to lead one of the firm’s and State’s largest and most complex projects, the Somerville High School. SMMA has become a leader in the evolving typology of comprehensive high schools and Matt has been a strategic part of that success." -Alex Pitkin, AIA
