New Science, Mathematics, and Technology Academy Opening Ceremony at Quincy High School
Quincy, MA – July 2, 2008 — A ribbon cutting ceremony on Sunday, February 22 marked the long-anticipated opening of the new Quincy High School Science, Mathematics and Technology Academy. Members of the school committee, building committee and school staff joined the celebration, as speakers including the Honorable Mayor Thomas P. Koch, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Richard DeCristofaro, and Building Committee Member Elaine Dwyer made remarks touting the benefits of the new academy. Following the ribbon cutting, Principal Frank Santoro lead a tour of the new facilities.
The new Academy offers students an exciting learning environment including integrated comprehensive learning labs, classrooms equipped with LCD projectors and interactive computer markerboards, multiple computer labs, a full-service restaurant, a CAD Lab, a greenhouse and sustainable garden with photovoltaic panels, solar hot water system, and wind turbine, and a 150-seat lecture hall. Courses offered include advanced placement courses in Physics, Math, Environmental Science, Health Sciences, Engineering and Horticulture. Students will also have access to National Honor Society programs, many advanced programs with prestigious colleges and universities, and technical certifications.
Construction of the new Academy took place on the site of the existing high school, which remained open during construction requiring carefully planning to minimize disruption to the school day while maximizing safety and efficiency.
The next phase of the project includes the demolition of the existing CTE building and the construction of a new 3-story, 224,000 SF wing. This will house a 3-station gymnasium with multi-purpose and fitness/cardiovascular rooms, a 750-seat auditorium, classrooms, and the administration wing. The project’s design and approach target meeting MA Collaborative for High Performance Schools (MA-CHPS) criteria.
