Cabot Corporation relocates laboratories
Cambridge, MA – September 24, 2007 — Cabot Corporation is relocating its Inkjet business unit into a new 60,000 square foot building on the southern part of its headquarters campus in Billerica, Massachusetts. The facility, designed by Symmes Maini and McKee Associates (SMMA), will house 22 labs with chemical storage, offices and workstations for 150 people, a 40-person lecture hall, lunch room, and a fitness center. 30% of the floor plan will be devoted to laboratories, which are organized in modules of 800sf each. SMMA’s programming effort prescribed this module design to accommodate all equipment-intensive needs, including multiple and multi-sized fume hoods, in a convenient and space-efficient manner. The design also features a relatively narrow floorplan to allow for generous natural light to illuminate the interior. A two-story glass curtain-walled transition space provides an area for laboratory staff collaboration and circulation.
In addition to the two-story Inkjet facility, Cabot’s site master plan includes a future 10,000 gsf pilot plant. SMMA’s services to the corporation include programming; architecture; interior design; mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and structural engineering; and permitting support for consulting firm Stantec, Inc., which is preparing the project’s permitting and site design.
