Providence College - Saint Martin HallProvidence, Rhode Island |
OverviewSt. Martin Hall is the home to the Alumni Development Office at Providence College. Constructed in 1859, the Italianate home was part of the Bradley Estate purchased by the College in 1910. The building was renamed in 1962 to honor St. Martin de Porres, patron saint of social and interracial justice. In 1972, the structure was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. SMMA provided architecture, interior and landscape design services for the renovation of the exterior and complete rehabilitation of the interior to create new offices and meeting spaces. Existing mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems were replaced and new air- conditioning and sprinkler systems added. Handicapped accessibility for the building was improved and a new catering kitchen installed. The project’s challenge was installing all new systems into the building while retaining the original architectural fabric. Custom plaster cornices and crown moldings were retained where possible and recreated elsewhere. Paint colors and finishes were chosen to reflect original historic colors and finishes. Winner of the 2006 Providence Preservation Society Award for Adaptive Reuse. |
