Springfield College - Richard B. Flynn Campus UnionSpringfield, Massachusetts |
OverviewThe Flynn Campus Union at Springfield College includes 30,000 sf of new construction (replacing the existing student center) and 20,000 sf of renovation. The College aimed to consolidate the existing Beveridge Center and new Campus Union into one building, not only to create more space, but to give the older Beveridge Center a new, updated image. The site design takes advantage of the prominence of the site, which is located between the main street running through the campus and the picturesque Lake Massasoit. The Union’s front entrance faces the central quadrangle, perched upon a hill that slopes gently behind the building down to the lake below. The rear glass-paneled facade and entrance provide dramatic views of the bucolic surroundings from all building spaces. The siting of the building footprint integrates the Union into the main pedestrian circulation routes and providing a terminus at a lakeside overlook. A double stair leads visitors to a terrace extension of the indoor cafe, a sweeping outdoor patio with a sundial at its center. |
