Bristol-Myers Squibb Building Recognized for Excellence in Manufacturing

Bristol-Myers Squibb Clinical Manufacturing Building

ENR New England recently announced Bristol-Myers Squibb’s Biologics Development Building and Devens Clinical Manufacturing Building received an award of merit in the manufacturing category. 2017 ENR New England winners will be recognized at this year’s New England Best Projects event held on December 12 in Boston, Massachusetts.

SMMA provided structural engineering services for the Bristol-Myers Squibb Devens Clinical Manufacturing Building in collaboration with CRB, who provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and architectural services. One of the team’s biggest structural accomplishments was developing an approach to create a large ballroom-like area using long span trusses, which ultimately created a column-free space. This allowed for lab areas to be outfitted with the necessary large-scale bio-pharmaceutical equipment required for Bristol-Myers Squibb’s late-stage clinical trials.

“There are few sites that allow companies to take a drug from initial concepts all the way through full-scale manufacturing,” explained Richard Croswell, Chief Structural Engineer at SMMA. “We were able to expedite the construction process which created a highly flexible space to meet Bristol-Myers Squibb’s needs both now and for future generations of drug development.”

The building itself consists of two lab areas with open test bays and a half-building bio-pharmaceutical equipment fit out. Since the Devens Clinical Manufacturing opening, SMMA has had continued involvement in the building’s facility upgrades and additional campus studies.

According to the ENR New England website, a panel of five industry professionals reviewed and judged 29 projects from Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont. Of the 29 projects, 24 projects received either an “award of merit” or “best project award” in 15 different categories.

An in-depth list of winners will be published in ENR New England’s print issue on December 25.
