Koulbanis Appointed Principal

SMMA is proud to announce that Nick Koulbanis, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, has been appointed Principal.

Koulbanis, Director of SMMA’s Higher Education studio, has been with the firm for two years and brings over 17 years of architectural experience in the Higher Education, Life Science, Health Sciences, and Commercial sectors. Koulbanis collaborates in the progressive development of SMMA’s projects, from programming and conceptual design to their evolution and completion. Through his leadership, SMMA is able to meet all design and client goals for his projects. His recent notable work includes multiple projects for Shire Pharmaceuticals, Brown University Physics and Engineering Labs, and the University of Connecticut Pharmacy School Medicinal Garden.

“It's great to have the opportunity to build on a well-established interdisciplinary practice,” Koulbanis explains. “To work alongside thought leaders in multiple design and engineering disciplines and to see the true spirit of collaboration and innovative thinking at work among our studios is invigorating.”

Koulbanis splits time between SMMA’s Cambridge, MA office and Providence, RI office, where he leads a number of educational and research projects and helps strengthen SMMA’s Rhode Island relationships.

“We are excited to announce the promotion of Nick Koulbanis, one of our next generation leaders who has the talent and determination to advance design excellence at SMMA,” says Ara Krafian, CEO. “Although Nick has demonstrated inspiring design strength across several markets, we chose to tap into his passion and expertise in Higher Education, as our HE Studio Director. For more than 60 years, SMMA has demonstrated the ability to find talented individuals that can lead the practice to higher levels of design success - I look forward to working with Nick as he helps us continue that tradition.”
