The SMMA Fund Awards Five Scholarships to High School Seniors

SMMA’s annual scholarship program has selected five high school seniors as the firm’s 2019 scholarship recipients.

The SMMA Fund has been serving the communities in which it has designed high school facilities since 2010. The firm has awarded a total of 40 college scholarships to students concentrating in architecture, engineering, and related disciplines out of its commitment to higher education, emerging professionals, and the built environment.

“Creating our comprehensive high school environments helped inspire the SMMA Fund,” says Alex Pitkin, Director of Institutional Practice. “They helped us recognize the need to support students entering any one of the allied design and engineering degree programs represented within SMMA’s integrated practice.”

This year’s recipients demonstrated leadership both academically and in their communities through programs such as the National Honor Society, Student Council, peer tutoring, theater, science and the arts, and volunteering with community service organizations.

The 2019 recipients are:

  • Stella Psiakis, Winchester HS – Endicott College; Interior Design
  • Stefano Mairui, Hudson HS – Penn State University; Civil Engineering
  • Nicholas Wong, Quincy HS – University of New Hampshire; Civil Engineering
  • Abigail Barker, Quincy HS – Seattle Pacific University; Interior Design
  • Angel Vargas, Chelsea HS – University of Massachusetts Boston; Civil Engineering
“I am very honored to have received SMMA’s scholarship this year,” says recipient Stella Psiakis. “It means so much to me as someone who has always wanted to be an interior designer […] This scholarship is helping me reach that goal.”
