Nick Koulbanis Elected AIA-RI VP/President-Elect

SMMA’s Nick Koulbanis was recently elected to serve the American Institute of Architects’ Rhode Island chapter as Vice President/President-Elect for 2021. Koulbanis, who served on the AIA-RI Board of Directors as Secretary in 2019 and 2020, is a Principal and the Director of the Higher Education Studio at SMMA.

AIA Rhode Island is highly committed to excellence in architecture and service to the public, endeavoring to bring together and serve all who are interested in the art and science of architecture. The Chapter is dedicated to enhancing the quality of our built environment, and thereby the quality of life. AIA Rhode Island aspires to increase the public’s knowledge and understanding of the architectural profession, expand the knowledge of all participating in the architectural process, and improve the quality of services provided by architectural professionals.

“It’s rewarding to be part of this organization and engage on issues affected by the built environment and architectural practice,” Koulbanis said. “I look forward to continue working with our members and community leaders to enhance dialogue and address opportunities and challenges within their communities.”

Koulbanis, a Rhode Island native, graduated from Roger Williams University in 2001 with a Bachelor of Architecture degree and a minor in Construction Management. With nearly 20 years of experience, he is licensed to practice architecture in multiple states, and has been involved with several Higher Education, Life Science, and Commercial Projects throughout the state. Through his background of research, writing, and presenting on active learning pedagogy and sustainability, he has become a leader in the world of design for Higher Education.
