Detailed Design Eye

Before coming to SMMA, Emma worked for multiple design firms specializing in healthcare. “The K-12 buildings I work on now have strong similarities to healthcare facilities,” she explains. “They’re complex, with a variety of end users and multifaceted engineering systems."

"I enjoy all the coordination these types of projects require. In both building types, BIM models are very useful in helping clients evaluate design and make changes; it makes the design on paper tangible and understandable.”

A Different Perspective

“As someone who oversees the BIM model, I’m often the point person for integration and exchange,” explains Emma. “I’m not necessarily the one figuring out the nuts and bolts of a certain problem or design detail—I sometimes have more of a high-level perspective on the design, which makes it easier to flag problems and then spur problem-solving and collaborative communication.”
