Creating Connections Through Environmental Graphics

Somerville High School
Somerville, MA

A critical challenge of the new Somerville High School (SHS) was weaving typically separated traditional and vocational programming together. To highlight this, one of the most prevalent themes within the environmental graphics for SHS reflects the connection of various studies. Our Graphic Design team had to not only visually connect these, but to illustrate that the relationship between them was already there.

We found inspiration from many sources to portray this in fun and unexpected ways: a color wheel that breaks into wavelengths to show the natural connection between art and science, a detailed language tree infographic to illustrate history and language, a showcase of culinary tools used throughout the world evoking cooking and culture, and architectural drafting plans for inventions across all industries. In total, SMMA provided over 4,000 sf of environmental graphics for the high school.
