Innovation Through Human Connection

Affectiva
Boston, MA

Affectiva, a growing startup championing Emotion AI through facial recognition software, recently moved to 53 State Street where SMMA worked on the office fit-out and environmental graphics. Amazingly, due to the high engagement of the client and SMMA’s collaborative work model, the entire office fit-out was accomplished on a tight budget in just under a month.

SMMA Interior Designer Abby Carroll creatively integrated the company into the existing floor plan while making sure that their desired open office concept also dedicated specialized zonings. Through varying furniture options and plants, she was able to provide privacy and noise reduction. This open office plan also maintained the building’s high-rise view of the stunning Downtown Boston area.

In collaboration with our workplace designers, our Graphic Design team elevated Affectiva’s brand and culture while also playfully using their facial recognition software for some of the environmental graphics throughout the space. Their goal was to marry the emotional aspect of Affectiva’s work with the technology they create. The range of graphics included: defining emotions through text displayed on glass walls along the conference rooms, abstract patent drawings on glass while also dedicating a wall to framed patents, and incorporating various celebrity and inspirational figure facial expressions to portray the startup’s unique technology in action.

The client, now settled in, loves their new visual and innovative workplace:

“You got our business, our technology, our values, and culture and weaved it all into the look and feel of our office – And did it on such a tight deadline too! You nailed it!”

–Rana el Kaliouby, CEO and Co-founder of Affectiva
